Mauritius-Africa Scholarship Scheme 2024 (October 2024 Intake)

Department of Higher Education and Training, DHET, is offering fully funded scholarships to Diploma, Bachelor’s Master’s and PhD students (Mauritius Africa Scholarship) . About DHET Scholarships

Scholarships are being made available by the Government of Mauritius to citizens of South Africa who meet the requirements to enroll in full-time, on-campus undergraduate and postgraduate programs at public Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Mauritius during the academic year 2024, which will begin in October of that same year.

Those citizens of South Africa who are interested in applying for the Mauritius-Africa Scholarship Scheme can contact the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), which serves as the Nominating Agency. The following information is reserved exclusively for South African applicants.

For more information on how to apply, applicants from other countries that are qualified should get in touch with either their own nation’s government or a local representative of the Government of Mauritius.

Deadline – 2024 Application Closing Date

15 July 2023 is the deadline for Mauritius Africa Scholarship. (2024 deadline is not yet announced) 

Note: Please be aware that the above deadline is different from what is contained in the rules that are listed below. This is due to the fact that the DHET, in its capacity as the nominating agency, needs to finish the processing of applications and selection processes. If you do not submit your application along with the required supporting documents by the stated deadline, your application will not be taken into consideration.

Eligibility for Mauritius Africa Scholarships 2024

  • South African citizens who are in excellent health and who have distinguished academic records;
  • Applicant must be interested in studying in Mauritius and also demonstrate dedication to contributing to the growth of South Africa.
  • Candidates are required to demonstrate that they will be available to study in Mauritius when their academic program begins in October 2024;
  • All applicants are required to fulfill the entry requirements of the program in Mauritius that they have chosen;
  • All applicants need to have a GPA that is at least equivalent to the minimum criterion for acceptance into a comparable program at a university in South Africa;
  • All applicants must fluent in English;
  • Applicant must not be a recipient of a scholarship from any other public source in the island nation of Mauritius;
  • Applicants are required to have already submitted an application to study on-campus full-time at one of the public institutions of higher education in Mauritius for the academic year beginning in 2023 (a proof of application must be submitted by the 31st of July, 2023 or 2024);
  • In order to enroll in a higher education program in Mauritius, recipients are required to get vaccination against COVID-19. Those recipients of the prize who, for medical reasons, are unable to be vaccinated will be asked to present medical certifications that have been properly approved;
  • The applicants are required to be prepared to go through a medical examination in Mauritius in accordance with the requirements set forth by the Passport and Immigration Office (http://passport.govmu.org). The results of the examination must be submitted to the Passport and Immigration Office, along with a copy to the Ministry, no later than one month after the applicants’ arrival in Mauritius.

Undergraduate Scholarship Applicants Requirements

  • Applicant must have successfully completed National Senior Certificate with a Bachelor’s pass and a minimum of 60% average mark achieved, excluding Life Orientation subject;
  • Applicants should be above 18 years of age and should not have reached their 26th birthday by August 2024.
  • Candidates who are already holding an undergraduate degree will not be considered.

Master’s Scholarship Applicants Requirements

  • For Master’s applicants, you must have completed an Honour’s degree with a minimum of 60% average mark score.
  • Applicants for Master’s Degree should be less than 35 years of age by 22 August 2024;
  • All applicants must submit a detailed study/research plan containing about 750 words and a name of a proposed supervisor in Mauritius, where required;
  • Applicants who are holding a Master’s degree already or its equivalent will not be considered.

PhD Scholarship Applicants Requirements

  • For PhD applicants, you must already hold a Master’s in research or equivalent degree in the relevant field and must have achieved a minimum of 60% average mark;
  • Applicants should be less 40 years of age by 22 August 2024;
  • All applicants must submit a detailed study/research plan of about 1,500 (one thousand five hundred words) words and a name of a proposed supervisor in Mauritius, where required;
  • Applicants must submit evidence of support from a named supervisor from one of the universities in Mauritius together with their application;
  • Applicants who are already holding a Ph.D. degree or its equivalent will not be considered.

Note that under this Scholarship Scheme, self-financing African students who are already enrolled in a programme in Mauritius are NOT eligible to apply for the same level of study in the same programme that they are already enrolled in.

What does the scholarship Cover – Offer?

  • Tuition fees and course-related costs of up to MUR 100 000.
  • Monthly living allowance to the value of MUR 12 500 (approximately R4 500).
  • Students are entitled to free basic health care in public hospitals in Mauritius.
  • Return airfare to and from Mauritius by the most economical route.

Note that awardees will be responsible for making their own arrangements to pay for their one-way flying tickets, after which they will submit an application for a refund upon arrival in Mauritius, along with all original receipts and documents required for the refund. Please read the instructions carefully to verify that you have all of the necessary papers to get a refund.

NOTE: Candidates who are successful will be expected to make financial arrangements to meet any additional costs that are not covered by this scholarship. These costs may include additional tuition fees on top of the tuition offer, costs of fieldwork and books, and costs to retake examinations. Before submitting an application, make sure you have thoroughly read the guidelines.

Eligible Fields of Study for Mauritius Africa Scholarship

Various fields of study are available at participating public tertiary education institutions in Mauritius for undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

NOTE: Applications for medical degrees will not be considered due to unresolved challenges with respect to clinical practice and professional registration.

How to Apply for Mauritius Africa Scholarship

Every person who wants to apply for the scholarship needs to demonstrate that they have submitted an application for at least one full-time on-campus program at a public university or college in Mauritius of their choice. Together with the application for the scholarship, you are required to submit either a conditional offer, proof of application, or an acknowledgment of application from a higher education institution in Mauritius. Application for university admission must be made as soon as the Mauritius institutions have opened their application windows on their respective websites.

In the event that you have not received confirmation of your application from the school of your choice by the 15th of July 2024, you are expected to provide the information, including evidence that the application fees have been paid, by the 31st of July 2023 at the absolute latest.

STEP 1: You are expected to submit an application for admission to identified accredited institutions in Mauritius (an application fee may be applicable and should be paid by the applicant as soon as such applicant receives an information of a successful nomination by the DHET). The application fee shall be refunded to successful applicants.

The final due date for submission of conditional offer/proof of application and proof of payment for application is 31 July 2024.

STEP 2: Ensure to complete the Mauritius Africa Scholarship Scheme application form. Email the completed application to [email protected] on or before 15 July, 2024 (for October 2024 intake). At this time, applicants are not required to complete section 6 (medical certificate). Applicants are requested to make sure they utilise the correct application form for their level of study.

Supporting Documents

Note that all the support documents must be clear and sent in PDF format. No photograph document will be accepted.

Applicants of the Mauritius Africa Scholarship are expected to:

  • provide a certified copy of the birth certificate.
  • provide a certified copy of biodata page of the passport.
  • provide a certified copies of all post-school qualification certificates.
  • provide a certified copies of all post-school academic transcripts.
  • provide a copy of letter of conditional offer by a public Higher Education Institution in Mauritius (if available at time of application) OR proof of application/ copy of acknowledgment notices from a Mauritian public HEI that the application has been made and the appropriate application fee has been paid. Due date 31 July 2024.
  • provide a proof of payment of application fees.
  • All postgraduate (Master’s and Ph.D.) applicants must attach a 1-2 page research plan, including research aims and objectives, methodology, and social relevance of the proposed study. Please refer to the guidelines for information about the study plan.

STEP 3: Selected (shortlisted) candidates may be required to complete an online form (questionnaire) that will be sent in due time.

After the receipt of the online questionnaire, there will be further selection (shortlisting) of applicants going into the next phase of selection who may be invited to attend an interview between 19 – 23 July 2024. Applicants who are selected at this stage will be informed by 15 July 2024 of the next steps.

ONLY the nominated applicants will be required to submit the medical certificate completed and stamped by a Registered Medical Practitioner in Section 6 of the Mauritius-Africa Scholarship application form.

Applicants should also be prepared to pay for medical checkup. The completed application document should be submitted to the DHET on or before 31 July 2024. 

STEP 4: Nominated applicants will be notified via their contact info of their final nomination and their application will be further reviewed by the Government of Mauritius after which the final decision on the successful applicants will be made.
