The University of Montana Scholarship awards hundreds of scholarships to support students who show academic promise and potential. Students are only considered for scholarship eligibility if they are admitted for a spring or fall term.

All new incoming University of Montana students will be automatically considered for the Montana resident and Non-resident (including WUE) scholarships. The application for admission to the University of Montana will also be the student’s application for these scholarships.

The University of Montana Scholarship for Freshman

Undergraduates pursuing their first bachelor’s degree are automatically considered for either the Western Undergraduate Exchange Program (WUE) or the University of Montana Academic Achievement Scholarships (UMAAS). Only students who are residents of western states are considered for the WUE.

Eligibility, Requirements, and Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be pursuing first bachelor’s degree
  • Have earned 12 or more graded credits at UM
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 (some scholarships have higher GPA requirements)
  • For need-based scholarships, file the FAFSA by March 1, 2023, and have a financial need

The University of Montana Scholarship for Transfer Student

Undergraduate transfer students pursuing their first bachelor’s degree are automatically considered for either the Western Undergraduate Exchange Program (WUE) or the University of Montana Academic Achievement Scholarship (UMAAS). Only students who are residents of western states are considered for the WUE.

Deadline

The application deadlines vary by department. New and continuing students who submit a completed General Application by March 1, Awarding begins Dec. 1 for the following autumn semester, and students must apply for admission by July 1st for consideration (or December 1st for spring semester awards).

The Financial Aid Office administers several scholarships that are available only to continuing students. Application is made through the UM Scholarship Portal. The application deadline for these campus-wide scholarships is March 1 for the upcoming academic year.

The University of Montana Scholarships for Non-Resident

1. Non-Resident Entering Student Scholarships

Non-resident undergraduates pursuing their first bachelor’s degree are automatically considered for either the Western Undergraduate Exchange Program (WUE) or the University of Montana Academic Achievement Scholarship (UMAAS). Only students who are residents of western states are eligible for the WUE.

Students are automatically considered for this merit scholarship when they apply.

The application for admission serves as the scholarship application. Please submit as many supporting documents as possible with your application. Awarding begins Dec. 1.

2. Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) Scholarship

The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) Scholarship is a highly competitive, academic, merit-based scholarship. The scholarship committee will automatically evaluate students from the WUE States for the WUE Scholarship based on the application for admission.

The University of Montana Scholarships for Montana Residents

1. University of Montana Academic Achievement Scholarship

The University of Montana Academic Achievement Scholarship (UMAAS) Program draws together many endowed scholarships and donations into a single scholarship pool known as the University of Montana Academic Achievement Scholarship (formerly known as the MAA).

Montana residents are automatically considered for this merit scholarship when they apply.

2. The Horatio Alger Montana Scholarship Program

The Horatio Alger Montana Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to eligible high school seniors in the state of Montana who aspire to pursue higher education at the University of Montana. This scholarship will be awarded according to the terms set by Horatio Alger.

The University of Montana Additional Scholarships

1. The Davidson Honors College Presidential Leadership Scholarship

The Presidential Leadership Scholarship is the University of Montana’s premier academic scholarship, recognizing outstanding talent, academic performance, and contribution to the community. Freshmen who wish to apply for the Davidson Honors College Presidential Leadership Scholarship must complete the Davidson Honors College (DHC) Application Form by December 4.

2. National Merit Scholarship

The University of Montana participates in the National Merit Scholarship Program and offers awards of $2,000 a year to finalists who have indicated UM as their first choice for attending college. Semi-finalists who enroll at UM receive an award of $1,000 a year. Interested students are encouraged to list UM as their first college choice.
